How to Curate Your Morning Routine

Ok! Today, we're talking about morning routines.

Wait! Wait! Don't scroll away or roll your eyes.

I know morning routines have come and gone in the social media wellness trends. You've probably heard it all. I have, too.

But—and this might not be what you want to hear—have you thought about bringing some intention to your mornings and how good that could be for you?

Morning routines are not some badge of honor, marking you as healthier or more productive than anyone else.

Your morning routine is meant to be helpful for you because how you start your day does matter. How you start your day impacts so much of how the rest of your day plays out and how you handle what comes your way.

When I say morning routines, I don't necessarily mean a two-hour, 10-step plan. It can be that, if you have the room in your schedule, but it can also be as simple as a short, 5-minute routine.

Here are a few simple steps to think about and start cultivating a morning routine that works for you:

  1. What is the time you have available to you for your morning routine? When you think about having a morning routine, identify how much time you currently have and how much time you'd ideally have.

  2. Work with where you're already at and go from there. Are you rushing to get out the door in the morning? Maybe start with waking up just five minutes earlier. Or, stack your habits and pray while you make your morning coffee (or matcha!).

  3. Is there anything you need to adjust? For instance, if you scroll on your phone before getting out of bed but don't want to do that, then place your phone in a different room the night before and use a regular alarm clock instead.

  4. Is there anything not currently part of your morning that you'd like to add into the rotation? Maybe you want to read your Bible before starting work or waking up the kids. Put your Bible in a convenient place that you'll actually see in the morning (maybe on your nightstand or by your coffee maker), and start small. Keep it simple and pick a book of the Bible, read a few verses each day, and think on and pray about them.

Most importantly, though, don't overthink it. Your morning routine should help you start your day well, be refreshing, feel uncomplicated, and hopefully be a little fun!
